NCERT to raise awareness on child sexual abuse by labelling genitals in the books for young children

New Delhi, June 13, 2018: In its new move, National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) will soon to revise books for young children. In its new version of books, the genitals for both the sexes will be identified separately.

The decision has come following a study conducted in 2016 by medical students of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) in Wardha according to reports pblished in indiatoday.in

 MGIMS STUDY ON NCERT TEXTBOOKS
  • The study had indicated the absence of adequate school education to raise awareness for sexual abuse of children.
  • According to Indian Express report, the study analyzed Class 1 and Class 2 NCERT textbooks and found that the syllabus though covered ‘human body parts’ but had refrained from labelling the genital organs
  • The diagram of a naked boy including the nose, knees and hands were labelled but books had kept the genital area covered

According to Savitri Devi, final year MBBS student from MGIMS, NCERT textbooks had the identification of male genitalia for Class 7 and female genitalia in Class 10.

STUDY SUBMITTED TO PM MODI AND OTHERS

The MGIMS report was submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the union human resource development minister and the Maharashtra education minister.

HERE’S WHAT A DOCTOR FROM FORENSIC MEDICINE DEPARTMENT AT MGIMS SAID:

“A minor victim of sexual abuse is unable to name body parts to describe an assault. They give vague references to private parts. It is necessary to educate children at an early age,” Dr Indrajit Khandekar said.

“Teaching students about these body parts may help increase reporting of cases,” he added.

“We will place the proposal before the textbook development committee whenever there is a revision. Whatever the committee decides, will be the final revision. So far, we have not decided which class will need a revision,” Professor Saroj Yadav, Dean at NCERT told Indian Express.
