New Delhi, February 28, 2019: Holistic approach in modern education has become quintessential for students across the world. With the stereotype education system long gone, students must observe, study and explore different facets of society and cultures for their all-round development. Service Learning Trips or Foreign Educational Trips not only nurture humanitarian qualities in students but also bring forth their expertise and develops new skills. These trips help in building the foundation of civic engagement skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills for the future profession of students, which is essential for our sustainable future.

In an interactive session with Mr. Saurabh Sabharwal, founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Volunteering Solutions, he shares his insights in the field and throws light on Service Learning Trips.

  1. What was the idea behind launching VolSol?

The idea of this venture took a realistic shape during the time I was purxsuing my management studies from Australia. At that time, the overseas market was costing a fortune for service learning trips and volunteer programs for students abroad. With an aim to provide affordable options in service learning programs, educational trips, and volunteering services we started Volunteering Solutions as a proprietorship firm in 2006 and registered VolSol as a private limited company in 2009.

Through VolSol, we thrive bridge the gap between volunteers and host communities to establish a ‘win-win’ situation for both. We look forward to provide an opportunity for holistic development of students through these service learning trips that can enhance their skills, develop new interests, and carve a better future. I think we have sown seeds of inspiration in several hearts, now it is time to nurture the saplings that have emerged so that they grow into strong trees in future.

  1. What impact will VolSol create in the education space?

Volunteering Solutions aims to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged people in different parts of the world. This initiative makes education more holistic and meaningful as it highlights all that is abstract, subtle, inspiring and mystical in the world teaching one to look within oneself. The affordable program cost ranges between USD 1000 to USD 4000 per individual, which is highly competitive in comparison to other international players. VolSol looks forward to associating with leading schools and other educational institutes across India to provide service-learning programs for holistic development of students.

  1. Which age group of students are targeting?

The age group for such Service Learning trips is starting from 12 years till 21 years of age.

How many students have availed the service till date?

In collaboration with NGOs, schools, hospitals, orphanages, HIV/AIDS clinics, women groups, and other social welfare organizations all across the globe, the company has successfully catered to requirements of over 19000 participants till date through nearly 140 service learning programs in 30 countries.

  1. How many schools are you servicing?

The company has catered to a vast variety of international schools and universities from the US, Canada, UK, Spain, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, and other major countries.VolSol is currently working with several leading schools in India.

  1. What is the importance of Service Learning Trips in educational curriculum?

The inclusion of foreign educational trips in educational curriculums not only nurtures humanitarian qualities in students but also brings forth their expertise and develops new skills.  There are many different ways of reaching the summit of a mountain but different routes suit different human beings. The greater the number of routes found, the more is the likelihood of a larger number of people reaching the peak. All routes are difficult and each takes many years to be found. But the experience of cultural immersion creates a new perspective of life in students and gives wings to their creativity in a longer run. A chance to spend time with natives and indulging in humanitarian activities create awareness of underlying connections and build new associations.

Foreign educational trips instill great qualities in students and open a new horizon for them to explore. This gives curious ones a chance to explore their interest areas and develop their expertise. The process of skill development and up-skilling during volunteering activities help students in molding a better future.

  1. How Service Learning Trips helps students in getting required exposure?

Service Learning Trips as a multifaceted practical experience helps in the holistic development of students by giving them a broader perspective of life. The practical educational experiences create an opportunity for skill development and up-skilling for students and generate their interest in new career avenues. Practical experience through cultural immersion helps students to build new perspective, develop creativity, and define their aims and goals in life. Students physically involve in the conservation, preservation, safeguard, development and betterment of the environment and its different elements, which gives them the required exposure.

When we engage ourselves in voluntary work without expecting any tangible benefit, we benefit in an intangible manner. This is something we have forgotten today. The principle followed is similar to Newton’s Third Law of Motion, with a slight modification. Any given action has a reaction that is more than the original action but comes delayed from the source other than that which is acted upon. True voluntary work is a fine example of this law of karma. People involved with such work have to face many difficulties but, over a period of time, they start emitting a glow that no money can buy.

  1. Why Service Learning Trips will continue to be a top trend in 2019?

Newton’s third law can be experimentally proved, while the law of “nishkama karma” can be proven experientially. Check out things through experience. It is a very powerful mechanism for validating the truth. Do put in ten percent of your time and money on something from which you don’t expect anything and watch the beautiful result. The holistic development approach through service learning and volunteering is not just helping in ‘making a difference’ in the world, but also increasing the travel and cultural immersion, personal growth, and professional development of interested individuals. To add to the facts, volunteers belonging to the age group of 18 and under have shown more enthusiasm to take on humanitarian tourism. This is why service learning trips are going to be one of the top education and travel trends in 2019.

  1. Future plans

Volunteering Solutions is planning to have a Pan India presence in the next financial year with offices in Bangalore and Mumbai. We look forward to associate with leading schools and other educational institutes across India to provide service learning programs. As a leading global service provider, VolSol plans to expand overseas in the near future.
