State Level Seminar on “Changing Trends & Strategies of Today’s Hospitality World.” Under the “Quality Improvement Programme” of Savitribai Phule Pune University

Maharashtra, April 09, 2019: Every year Maharashtra State Institute of Catering Technology, Pune conducts a State Level Seminar under the “Quality Improvement Programme” of Savitribai Phule Pune University. Each year sets a new tone for hotel industry as trends keep changing driven by growing customer expectations. To understand the challenges and strategies used by hoteliers, this being the Golden Jubilee year for the institute, the focus is on- Changing Trends & Strategies of Today’s Hospitality World.” on 31st January& 1stFebruary 2019

Change is the only constant. It is essential that we stay aware of the changes and mould ourselves to be able to adapt to the ever evolving environment around us. The institute’s mission has been to ensure that the young professionals are updated with relevant information from the industry from time to time. Keeping this in mind the institute has organise various seminars and workshops for the past couple of years, this being the 5th consecutive year of hosting the seminar. Having been in the fore front of creating hospitality stalwarts for the past five decades, it is our privilege to be the oldest and yet the most ‘current’ campus in the region. We have recently upgraded our facility by adding another wing of state of the art equipment and facilities for students. This is our contribution to reducing the gap between what the students learn and what they experience in the industry. This year the seminar created yet another forum for contemplation about the ever evolving world of hospitality through a line of very eminent contemporaries who have seen the evolution from close quarters.

During the two day seminar thedistinguished speakers who shared their experience and vision were Chef Nitin Tandon, leading Food Stylist and F& B Consultant, Mr Sasha Anand, Director Pomelo Social, a Digital media consultancy, Chef Anupa Das, Content head – Research Khana Khazana Pvt ltd, Ms Avril Sule, Consultant, Educator and Trainer, Mr Vikram Sharma, Director Human Resources, Marriott International, Mr Abhijit Chitnis CEO Goldfieldd Hospitality and Mr Abhay Singh, Director Operations Westin Pune. The seminar was attended by students, academia from colleges across the state and Industry representatives.

On 31st of January 2019 , the seminar was inaugurated  by Dr D. R. Nandanwar, the Joint Director, Technical Education Regional Office, Pune , our guest of honour, Mr Sharan Shetty, Senior Vice President of Pune Hoteliers Association and training managers and operations managers from the more renowned hotels in Pune were amongst the invitees. From the Academia, we had the Head of the institutes and Head of Departments of various hotel management and general management colleges under the Savitribai Phule Pune University as well as other deemed universities in the state attend the seminar. There were a total of 190 attendees from within the university and outside,  for the event.

Mr Abhijit Chitnis spoke about the changing technology dynamics of today’s hospitality industry. He illustrated how today’s hoteliers need to be specialists rather than generalist.

Ms Avril Sule spoke about how evolutions and changes have occurred within the departments of a hotel. The highlight of the discussion was about how we need to rewind to find solutions, refocus on guest engagement drivers and recognize the need for change.

The post lunch session was addressed by Mr Sasha Anand, Director Pomelo Social, A Digital Marketing firm. He spoke about how digital marketing has today become the next frontier to attract more guests. Platforms like Instagram, Zomato, Facebook, Twitter and micro blogging sites are today substituting traditional mediums like newspapers, radio and pamphlets.

Day two began with felicitating the speaker for the day. Chef Nitin Tandon, Food stylist and Food and Beverage Consultant and Chef Anupa Das, Content head Research, Khana Khajana Pvt Ltd. specially drove down from Mumbai to be a part of the seminar.

Chef Nitin Tandon spoke about his journey through the years he spent at Taj Group of Hotels and Oberoi Hotels and with all the experience and dedication, he has today become a successful food stylist running his own enterprise. Mr. Tandon shared about his stints working with celebrities like Amitabh Bacchan and Rajnikant and also travelling to England for a promotional event by Venkys Chicken.

Chef Anupa ‘Hard work and enjoying what you do’ is what will make you stand apart from the mass in the industry.

Mr. Abhay Singh , Director of Operations with Westin Hotel, Pune with his enthusiasm and drive, geared the crowd into how Food and Beverage is undergoing a sea of change behind the doors.  Mr. Singh spoke about how it has become more important than ever to deliver an amazing product with just as good service. He brought to light how technologies like geo-tagging is today used to surprise and amaze the guests.

The Final speaker was Mr. Vikram Sharma, Director Human Resources Westin Pune. He spoke about the expectations the hotel management has from associates. He brought to the forefront how hotels are today changing HR practices and realizing that Customer satisfaction is a direct function of employee gratification.

Staying true to the tradition of delivering consistently to the expectations of the academia and the industry, this year’s seminar was a huge success as well. The institute, through such efforts is contributing consistently towards the better coordination between the hospitality industry and the aspiring professionals. Every passing year’s success gives the institute its motivation and impetus to outperform its potential year after year.
