Fostering Stronger Attention Skills in Preschool-Aged Children

By Mrs. Niru Agarwal, Managing Trustee, Greenwood High International School

Consider working for six consecutive hours without the opportunity to take a short break. The reason behind it seeming demanding and impossible is called attention span. Attention span is how long one can concentrate on a task or topic without getting distracted. When the topic or subject interests a person, it seems easy to focus. Still, its underlying reason, even for topics that are dear to the person, is that attention span is a skill that develops over time. On average, the attention span of an adult can be nearly twenty minutes. Children usually have shorter attention spans than adults as they tend to get distracted and have to take mental and physical breaks to rejuvenate themselves. Nevertheless, a strong attention span is a useful and valuable asset for children. A strong attention span enables preschoolers to concentrate on tasks, increases learning, and enhances participation, all necessary for their emotional and cognitive growth. The article will discuss effective ways to build and expand preschoolers’ attention spans.

Expected Attention Spans by Age

One of the most important factors influencing attention is the level of hydration. Therefore, it is important to ensure your preschooler is well-hydrated. Even slight dehydration can have adverse effects on the attention span of a child. Drinking water regularly and making it a game by adding an enjoyable activity like a friendly competition can work wonders.

The Role of Hydration

One of the most crucial factors that affect attention is the hydration level. Hence, ensuring that your preschooler remains well-hydrated is crucial. Even mild dehydration can negatively affect the attention span of a student. Encouraging your child to drink water at regular intervals and making it interesting by adding a fun activity such as a friendly competition can help. Initially, introduce them to brief and focused activities that match their current attention span. As time proceeds, introducing them to different activities followed by a gradual increase in the duration helps to increase the attention span.

The Importance of a Consistent Routine

A consistent daily routine is also critical in increasing attention span. A routine helps children form an idea of recurring patterns and help them to predict more. This helps children know what to expect and prepares them for focused activities. However, dividing these tasks into manageable chunks makes it easier for children to stay focused without becoming overwhelmed.

Engaging Activities to Boost Attention

Activities involving active participation, such as puzzles, building blocks, and interactive story time, help children appreciate and participate in holding their attention for longer periods. Colourful, tactile, and stimulating materials help capture children’s interest and encourage them to engage with the task. This also allows the space to make the activities interesting for children and achievable. Positively appreciating and rewarding them for their efforts helps sustain attention. Periodically acknowledging them also keeps them motivated to keep trying.

Setting the Foundation for Lifelong Learning

Building a stronger attention span sets and lays the groundwork structure for future learning success. By incorporating these methods into daily interactions, attention span can be increased. Strong attention helps children internalise important messages, building their confidence and belief in their ability to achieve their dreams and goals. Thus, leading to enhanced productivity, better performance and deeper engagement.
