Greenwood High Students Engage in Cricket Masterclass Led by Mathew Sinclair

Session during Summer Camp focuses on fundamentals, mental resilience, and game awareness for young cricketers

Bengaluru, May 09, 2026: Greenwood High International School conducted a special cricket coaching session as part of its Summer Camp, featuring former New Zealand international cricketer Mathew Sinclair. The session brought together young cricket enthusiasts across age groups, offering them the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced international player and gain deeper insights into the game.

During the session, Sinclair focused on the fundamental principles that underpin strong cricketing performance. He highlighted the importance of mastering core techniques such as grip, stance, and balance, noting that a solid foundation is essential before progressing to advanced skills. Emphasising the need for sharp observation, he encouraged students to watch the ball early, explaining that the ability to read the ball quickly plays a crucial role in timing and shot selection.

A key area of discussion was footwork, which Sinclair described as central to effective batting. He explained that proper movement allows players to position themselves accurately and execute shots with greater control and confidence. Alongside technical skills, the session also addressed the mental aspects of the game. Students were encouraged to remain composed under pressure, approach challenges constructively, and view setbacks as opportunities for learning.

The interaction also covered game awareness and decision-making, with Sinclair urging players to better understand match situations, adapt to different bowling styles, and respond to field placements. He further underscored the importance of physical fitness and discipline, noting that consistent preparation and structured routines contribute significantly to long-term performance.

Encouraging a more focused approach to training, Sinclair advised students to practise with clear intent, setting specific goals for each session to maximise improvement. He also reminded young athletes to enjoy the sport, emphasising that a genuine passion for the game is key to sustained growth and development. The session provided students with practical takeaways and a clearer understanding of the skills and mindset required to progress in cricket, both at the grassroots level and beyond.

Speaking on the initiative, Mrs. Niru Agarwal, Managing Trustee of Greenwood High International School, said, “Exposure to experienced athletes plays an important role in shaping a student’s sporting journey. Sessions like these not only strengthen technical understanding but also help build the discipline, focus, and mindset required to excel in sport.”

Through such engagements, Greenwood High continues to integrate expert-led learning into its sports programmes, offering students meaningful opportunities to develop their abilities in a structured and supportive environment.
