NEW DELHI, August 24, 2023: Studying abroad is a dream come true for many students, and when it comes to choosing the perfect destination, Australia is undoubtedly one of the top choices for numerous international students, especially those from India.

The increasing number of Indian Punjabis in Australia is a testament to this fact. According to the Census 2021 data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of Punjabi speakers has risen by 80 percent in the past five years – reaching over 239,000. However, it’s noteworthy that Australia welcomes students from all over the world and is not just limited to Indian students.

Australia further attracts students from different countries as well. In the last five years alone, the country has welcomed over half a million students from all over the world across multiple courses; in 2022 hosting nearly 619,000 students. Prodigy Finance addresses the top five countries that have a sizable impact on Australia’s vibrant and diverse postgraduate student population.

China: It seems that the number of Chinese students enrolling in Australian universities has increased. This trend may be attributed to the warning issued by China’s education Minister that online learning from overseas would no longer be recognized post-pandemic. According to ADHA  data, from July 2022 to March 2023, more than 71,600 Chinese students were granted Australian student visas, with over 80% of all visas granted to Chinese students being for higher education. It is interesting to note that the fiscal year 2022/23 saw a record number of applications from Chinese students, particularly during the months of January to March.

India: Due to the growing Indian Punjabi population and the fact that Punjabi is one of the top 5 languages spoken in Australian homes, many Indian students are choosing to study in Australia alongside the majority of Punjabis who have relocated there for better employment and business opportunities. Australia is a popular choice for Indians who want to feel at home while studying abroad, but students from other cities in India have also expressed interest in attending Australian universities, resulting in a total of 95,791 Indian students enrolling there from January to April 2023 according to High Commission of India, Canberra, Australia.

Nepal: Nepalis are drawn to Australia since the 2015 Earthquake hit, and the number of students from Nepal studying in Australia has increased. Not only is Australia globally renowned for higher education for its dynamic and diverse education culture, but it also rescued students during the 2015 Nepal earthquake. During this time, the number of student visas granted to Nepali students nearly quadrupled, rising from around 6,000 to a record high of nearly 23,650 according to ADHA data. Since then, there has been no turning back for Nepali students choosing to study in Australia, and the number is growing year on year.

Malaysia: Studying in Australia is becoming an increasingly popular choice among Malaysian students due to the country’s reasonable cost of living and the availability of scholarship opportunities. In addition, partnering with financial organizations like Prodigy Finance and the option to work part-time while studying can help cover expenses. Sharing and renting accommodations with other students is also a great way to cut costs and make studying in Australia even more affordable.

Vietnam: As a student living in Vietnam during the pandemic and post-pandemic era, it can be challenging to make ends meet given the high cost of living and low wages from part-time jobs. However, studying in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, can be a viable option as students can earn sufficient income from casual part-time jobs to cover their living expenses. Moreover, the cost of living in Melbourne is relatively low compared to Sydney, and the career opportunities available for students in Australia are promising.
