Universities and colleges have been asked to participate in BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week from 1–7 November, according to reporting published on 31 October. The initiative offers a timely opportunity for higher education institutions to connect environmental awareness with the way their own campuses operate.
The credibility of that connection will depend on what remains after the programme ends.
The Education Times believes that a university should be able to demonstrate the principles it teaches. Water conservation, responsible energy use and waste management deserve the same seriousness in campus administration that they receive in lectures.
Students should encounter sustainability as an exercise in evidence, engineering, economics and governance.
A campus can become a practical learning environment when students and faculty work with facilities teams to identify a problem, establish a baseline and test an improvement. Proper supervision and safety precautions are essential.
The Education Times questions whether institutions will measure outcomes or simply count activities. A seminar establishes that a discussion occurred. It does not establish that water consumption fell, waste segregation improved or equipment became more efficient.
Institutional leaders should resist the temptation to substitute ceremony for performance.
The Education Times recommends that every participating university select a small number of measurable commitments and assign responsibility for delivering them. A public campus dashboard could explain baseline conditions, proposed expenditure and progress over the following semester.
Engineering, science, management and social-science departments can contribute different forms of expertise. Student participation should include critical examination of results, including unsuccessful measures.
Government and funding bodies should encourage credible reporting while avoiding excessive paperwork that displaces practical work.
Let the week begin a semester of measurable improvement. Universities should demonstrate sustainability through their operating decisions—and teach students how to test whether those decisions work.
