From School to Opportunity: Career Guidance Must Reach Every Student-Khazi Altaf Hussian

Education prepares young people not only for examinations, but for decisions that shape their working lives. Yet many students and families still lack dependable guidance on the pathways available after school.

The Central Board of Secondary Education, together with Delhi–NCR Sahodaya School Complexes, organised its fourth national summit on “Facilitating School-to-Work Transition” in New Delhi on 26–27 October 2026. Reported themes include digital skills, career guidance and closer engagement between educational institutions and industry.

The summit provides a platform for discussion; it should not be mistaken for an announced nationwide change in curriculum or employment policy. timesofindia.indiatimes.com

The Education Times believes the discussion should move beyond a narrow question of whether students are “job-ready”. Young people need strong foundational learning, communication skills, digital literacy, career information and the confidence to choose among higher education, vocational training, entrepreneurship and employment.

Access is central. A student in a smaller town should not be disadvantaged because a school cannot employ a full-time counsellor or organise expensive industry visits. District-level career guidance networks, shared counsellors, local-language resources and partnerships with credible training institutions could help widen access.

Industry leaders can contribute by explaining actual entry-level roles, providing supervised exposure and supporting teachers with up-to-date knowledge. Such collaboration should protect students from misleading placement promises and unpaid work presented as training.

Policymakers should ask how guidance will be delivered, who will be responsible, and how success will be measured—not only by the number of events held, but by whether students can make better-informed choices.

Education’s promise is fulfilled when a young person can see a pathway from learning to opportunity—and has the support to pursue it.
